I HAVE been telling people about the low cost of day-to-day essentials in certain destinations for some time and then I came across an article on the Post Office website and thought I would share it.

We don’t do a lot of business to many of these areas mainly because other places are easier to reach with fewer plane changes but I suspect that a really good price will change people’s attitude.

The article says: “The sun is shining on long haul holiday hotspots this autumn and winter as the strength of sterling has helped prices plummet by up to 41 per cent.

“The annual Long Haul Report from Post Office Travel Money reveals that prices for tourist items are down in half of the 33 resorts surveyed.”

Key findings include:

  • Far East holiday resorts are good bets this winter, with Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia all in the top 10 for value
  • Indonesia’s best-known island, Bali, is the cheapest resort surveyed for the third year running, followed closely by Cape Town in South Africa
  • Prices are down by 21.5 per cent in Tokyo – and by 50 per cent since 2013 – making Japan an increasingly affordable holiday option
  • The biggest price falls are in Penang, where the barometer basket of tourist items has plummeted 41 per cent year-on-year, taking the Malaysian island to 10th place
  • Costs are also lower in safari favourite Kenya, the world’s theme park capital Orlando, and Mexico’s most popular beach resort Cancun
  • Destinations ‘down under’ are benefiting from a sterling surge as UK holidaymakers can expect to get 21 per cent more Australian dollars and 23 per cent more New Zealand dollars than last autumn – that’s around £90 extra on a £500 foreign exchange transaction.”
