SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL’S under-14 netball team has enjoyed another season laden with silverware.

They are Greater Manchester County Champions, Greater Manchester Play-Off Champions, North Manchester County League title winners and North West Regional runners up.

And the team automatically gained a place in the National Schools Netball Finals at Basildon Sporting Village, Essex.

They won three and drew two of the eight matches in their section which unfortunately meant they did not make the semi-finals, though they did exceptionally well to reach the finals.

The year nine netball team was also successful winning the Oldham Schools’ Cup which was played at Oasis Academy.  The team was: Morgan Evans (captain), Jasmine Newell, India Butler, Rayna Gardner, Erin Kehoe, Taeja Lucas, Sally Bradley, Erin Bell and India Collinge.

The year seven basketball team won the Oldham Schools’ Cup defeating Failsworth 17-0 in the final.

All 12 Saddleworth team players performed superbly throughout the day but special mentions to Elijah Wolstenholme and Ethan Buckley who scored the lion’s share of their points.

Saddleworth’s year eight athletics team made their debut at the Greater Manchester Indoor Athletics Tournament.  The boys finished third and girls in sixth place.

And 15 talented cricketers from years seven/ten were selected to attend a day at Yorkshire Cricket Club where they had the experience they will remember for a long time.

The trip to Headingley was funded by the Yorkshire supporters’ message board, the Corridor of Uncertainty, Yorkshire Ridings Society and Saddleworth White Rose Society.

After a ground, museum tour and question-and-answer session, the boys had two indoor friendly games against Barnoldswick High School. There was a win for the under-13’s and narrow defeat for the under-15’s.

The best was yet to come as former England captain Alec Stewart then joined the lads for a bowling and batting session as he advised every student on how to improve different aspects of their game.

Saddleworth’s Matthew Barlow, from year seven, was presented with a signed Yorkshire CC shirt as the player to have displayed the best level of technical ability on the day.

All the boys received a signed mini cricket bat from Stewart as a memento of the day which concluded with a team photograph alongside the new Yorkshire Bank Pro 40 Cup.
