Salon 7: Love your feet

Michelle Bradley, from Salon 7, looks at how to look after your feetsalon7

Love your feet! Is it time they had a treat?

I HAVE spent this week finally shoving my heavy winter boots to the back of the wardrobe and making my sandals and flip flops easily accessible with the promise of some warmer weather.

This however did make me take a long hard look at my feet, and yes it’s time my toes had some new polish and maybe sort out some other hard-working feet related issues.

Is a pedicure essential maintenance for healthy feet or an indulgence I asked myself? My feet go through a lot each day; whenever they aren’t pounding up and down the stairs at work they are pounding the pavements while I am running to keep my body healthy, so shouldn’t I look after them a bit better?

While a pedicure isn’t the same as a chiropody appointment a regular pedicure could prevent the need to see one, or if you are it could support the work a chiropodist is doing.

A Salon 7 pedicure starts with our therapist removing the hard skin that causes painful cracked heels. Your feet will then be treated to an exfoliating scrub to remove any dead skin, followed by a refreshing citrus soak.

Your feet and lower legs will then be given a wonderfully relaxing massage to improve circulation, relax muscles and moisturise your skin. Our therapist will then remove dead skin from around your cuticles and cut and shape your toenails.

Finally, your pedicure will be finished off with a polish, gel polish or twinkle toes, leaving you feeling relaxed and eager to show off your beautiful feet.

A luxury pedicure would also include a treatment such as a paraffin wax treatment where your feet are encased in paraffin wax then placed in heated boots for ten minutes; a perfect treatment for extremely dry skin and eczema. If a paraffin wax isn’t for you then there is a choice of foot mask which is applied to your feet and sets while your feet are encased in heated boots.

A good tip for any pedicure appointment is to think about your footwear. Spa standard polish can take up to 12 hours to dry completely so if you put socks or tights on straight after your pedicure, or even a few hours later, you are likely to ruin your beautiful polish. My advice would be to make sure you have a pair of flip flops or open toed sandals to wear on your way home or choose a pedicure with a gel polish or twinkle toes that are cured under a UV light which will then be dried instantly.

So, the answer to my question is yes, it is really essential maintenance to look after your feet (and a good way to explain my expenditure!).

The right timing for a pedicure is around once a month to keep on top of toenail length and to ensure hard skin doesn’t become a problem that leads you to needing a chiropodist. It also stands to reason that your posture begins at your feet; if you cannot walk or stand comfortably because of sore feet, cracked heels, corns or blisters then the effect is going to be felt everywhere else too.

Salon 7 are offering Saddleworth Independent readers a 25% discount off a pedicure this month whether it’s a tailored, luxury, French, gel or twinkle pedicure.

And you’ll get 50% off your next one if booked within four weeks. Now that sounds like a great start to keeping your feet in tip top condition throughout the summer!
