A POPULAR school governor has received a Long Service Award to recognise his total of 71 years of distinguished service at schools across the borough.

Dr Richard Knowles, a university lecturer on Transport Geography and a retired councillor, received his award at Saddleworth School Governors’ Meeting from Karen Holmes of Oldham Council.
He was commended for his distinguished service at Saddleworth Secondary School (31 years to date), Diggle Primary School (19 years), Friezland Primary School (10 years) and at St Hilda’s Primary, Kaskenmoor Secondary and Oldham College.
Richard said as a passionate believer in state education he has made a lifelong commitment both as a Governor and in his work in Higher Education for the last 43 years.
Both of his children were educated at Saddleworth, where he particularly enjoyed the challenge of being Chair of Governors as well as at Diggle and Friezland.
He added he is excited at the opportunities for children’s education that will be provided by the new £17 million School after so many years of campaigning for the facilities.
