School plea for old phones to swap for iPads

YOUR OLD and unwanted mobile phone could be put to good use as a Grasscroft school for children with autism is swapping them in for new iPads.

Friends of Bright Futures School are asking for people to donate their old technology which they can then exchange for new through a scheme run by charity Hearts and Minds.

But they need all the help they can get as 165 phones must be traded in to get one iPad – so to provide iPads for their seven pupils to use in school they need 1,155 phones.

By using iPads children with autism can work on receptive and expressive language, fine motor skills, problem-solving skills and joint attention.

The technology would help Bright Futures School focus on the core difficulties at the heart of autism as they offer specialist provision and education.

There is a collection box for phones at the school on Oldham Road as well as in local businesses including Tesco in Greenfield, Diggle Post Office, Lifestyle Fitness Centre, Woolyknit in Diggle, Jo Kelso Fitness, Ellison IT in Mossley and Ernst and Young in Manchester.

Zoe Thompson, from Bright Futures School, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Ernst and Young and Ellison IT who have already each collected 20 phones, getting us off to a great start.

“If you are able to collect for us at your workplace or via friends and family, we’d really appreciate it.

“If you have a large number of phones, we can arrange for them to be collected. Please email fbfs@brightfuturesschool.co.uk”
