OLDHAM COUNCIL is urging residents to sign up for an energy saving scheme to help them slash their energy bills.
Everyone who registers an interest in the collective energy switching scheme, which is supported by the ten Greater Manchester councils, will be given a range of different options to save money.
If you switch energy suppliers through the scheme it is estimated you could save up to £250 a year – and last year one resident made big savings of more than £600.
Two similar energy switching schemes held last year meant 4,577 households cut more than half a million pounds off their bills – and it is now hoped even greater savings can be made this year.
Councillor Arooj Shah, Deputy Cabinet Member for Communication and Campaigns, said: “The cost of keeping warm is a major concern and I would urge anyone interested in saving money to take advantage of this scheme – particularly as the more people sign up the better the deals that will be available.
“Getting a better deal on your energy bills means more money in your pocket to spend on other essentials.”
To sign up, simply visit betterenergydeals.org.uk or call 0800 988 2426 by March 2. Residents just need to provide basic information, such as which gas and electricity suppliers they use and how much they pay a month, to register an interest.
The organisers will then hold a ‘reverse auction’ on March 3, in which energy suppliers will bid for their business by offering their best prices.
Cllr Shah added: “The good thing about this scheme is you don’t have to accept the auction offer, and anyone who registers will be given a range of alternative offers based on how much energy you use, so you’ve absolutely nothing to lose by signing up.”
