THE FORMER Spar supermarket on Uppermill High Street is in new hands.
The Independent understands the premises were sold at the end of April.
A successful planning application to change the use from retail to an Italian restaurant with seating for 150 diners and car parking for up to 20 vehicles was passed by Oldham Council on March 22.
However, it is believed the applicants aren’t the new owners.
In our January 2017 edition we reported the building was ear marked as a spin-off from the successful family run Mazzo Italian restaurant in Royton.
However, applicant Addy Hoxha, contacted the paper to confirm she was no longer involved in the project and is looking for alternative premises in the area.
The successful planning application specified the restaurant opening times as: Monday-Friday, 11.30am-11.30pm plus 11.30am-12 midnight on Saturday and Sunday.
The Spar store closed to customers in April 2016 – just 18 months after reopening.
Delighted locals had welcomed the return of the store, which had occupied the key site in the village for 20 years, in September 2014 after it shut the previous year.
But it closed for good last Spring and has remained empty since.
