Two friends have taken their passion for running to the next level.
And they hope their new venture will encourage more people across Oldham, Saddleworth and Tameside to join them on the road to fitness and activity.
Bryan Lawton and David Emanuel, both members of Royton Road Runners, have opened the Oldham branch of Up and Running on Huddersfield Road, Greenacres.
“Bryan has always had an idea of owning a running shop,” explained David. “When he retired from the police he worked part time at the Up and Running shop in Manchester.
“Last year he brought me on board and we looked at the potential of opening the business.
“We recognised a lack of specialist running shops in the area and we both have our connection with local clubs. Then it was just the case of finding the right location.”
The ‘right location’ is situated adjacent to the Tesco superstore.
“We’re easy to get to, there’s free parking and everything you don’t get from a town centre location,” added David.
The new Up and Running store is open seven days a week; Monday-Friday, 9.30am-6pm and from 11am-5pm on Sunday.
There is also late night opening on Tuesday until 8pm when Bryan and David intend hosting a social running group.
“We are starting next month and it will be aimed at people who are not members of a running club but would like other people to run with.
“The idea is to make it a social activity rather than be competitive or pushing for times. We are already signing up people which is excellent.
“But our primary market is the shoes. The beauty of having the shop is having a place where customers can try them on and get a correct fitting because we offer a free, full gait analysis as part of the service.
“We put them in good pair of neutral shoes, see how they run, see how their feet plant and from there we will try and recommend the right pair of shoes.
“We always say whatever else you wear on your feet, the most important thing is getting the right shoes and a decent pair of socks.”
