The award recognises her outstanding support of the borough’s vulnerable children and young people since joining the council in September 2014.

Stephanie impressed judges with her confidence and ability in managing a series of complex cases that would have proved testing for any practitioner, let alone someone newly qualified.

She was also praised for having a real talent for establishing relationships with young people, even in the most difficult circumstances, and asking the question: “Would this be good enough for my child?”

In particular, Stephanie’s work with young people who were victims of sexual abuse stood out, with one of her clients describing her as “one of the best social workers you could ever have”.

Stephanie, who was nominated by her impressed practice manager Nick Whitbread, said: “It’s amazing to have won this award; I didn’t expect it at all.

“I’m just doing my job, so it’s really nice to be recognised on this scale. I just go and do my job every day and try my hardest, so I’m overwhelmed and humbled.”

Gail Hopper, Director of Children’s Services, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Stephanie – she has done incredibly well and this award is richly deserved.

“I would also like to thank her colleagues and managers for providing a working environment that has allowed Stephanie to flourish. Her achievement is something we can all be very proud of.”

Councillor Donna Martin, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Stephanie sets an amazing example to other social workers who are just starting out in the profession.

“The fact her work has been recognised at national level shows just how impressive her first year has been with Rochdale, as well as the excellent support she has received in her team.

“Huge congratulations to her – we have big hopes for her future!”
