Stan Bowes, from Diggle, has uncovered some interesting and entertaining facts – you just couldn’t make them up.

WHAT WE now call Irish Dancing, as epitomised in ‘River Dance’, was originally known as ‘Door Dancing’!
Practised in humble surroundings, it was quite normal to remove a door from its hinges and place it on the floor to provide a solid surface over the typically earthen floors.
Naturally, there was very little space on such dance-floors, permitting no more than two people to dance at a time.
Even with this limitation, it was necessary to limit movements to jumping up and down, and to keep the arms close to the body – leading to complex foot movements. From such beginnings came the very much refined River Dance.
