Star speaks out for cancer research

FOOTBALL LEGEND Joe Royle will reminisce on ‘A life in football’ at a fundraising event this month after being inspired by his daughter-in-law’s battle against breast cancer.

Eva Royle, 39, who is married to Joe’s son Darren, was diagnosed in December 2012 while pregnant with her fourth child.

But with special care from The Christie she underwent chemotherapy before giving birth and is now recovering from surgery, more chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

And inspired by her courageous fight against the disease, her Delph-based family are raising funds for Breast Cancer Care by holding the fundraising speech on Saturday, March 29.

Joe will talk about his career as a player and manager with emphasis on his happy memories at Oldham Athletic as well as his time spent at Everton and Manchester City.

The event will be followed by a complimentary Hog Roast at the White Lion.

Darren said: “We want to raise awareness as well as money to help with the great work the charity does.

“Eva is a fit and healthy young marathon runner. People think cancer only affects older people but it’s important to raise awareness that young women are at risk too.

“We thought we were going to lose the baby but the help and care from The Christie was amazing.”

Eva is planning to run the London Marathon in April with Darren, held a charity fashion show last month, and has already raised more than £4,000 on her Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/Evaroyle

‘A life in football’ with Joe Royle will take place on Saturday, March 29 at 7.30pm at the Millgate Arts Centre in Delph. Tickets cost £12, with all proceeds to Breast Cancer Care, and must be booked in advance.

Tickets are available from Darren Royle by calling 07739 759711 or emailing enquiries@dhrsports.com or by calling Gilbert Symes on 07717 332855.
