A FUNDRASING event at a Greenfield pub saw a local resident raise a gigantic £3,000 for a charity close to his heart.
Norman Wisely co-ordinated the cheese and wine evening with an auction and raffle at the Wellington Pub in aid of Macmillan Nurses, with £100 donated by First Group.
He said partner Stephanie Howard, who is undergoing cancer treatment, is his inspiration for putting on the event.
“Stephanie is the love of my life and I wanted to do something to help,” he said. “So with friends we got together at the Wellington and decided to have a cheese and wine evening.

“The people I must thank are for the auction and raffle prizes and Gwendoline the singer, and a special thank you to Gary Armstrong who rounded the total amount off at £3,000.”
One of the cheeses on offer at the event, which was attended by around 170 people through the evening, was the smelliest cheese in Britain, known as ‘Stinking Bishop’.
Auction prizes included a signed Manchester City shirt and ball, two tickets for a Manchester United, a United ball and shirt from star Paul Scholes, and a pair of Ricky Hatton’s boxing gloves.
There were also prizes from Cartax, two clay pigeon shooting sessions courtesy of the Crowther family, and four full Reiki healing sessions from Moonstone mind body and spirit shop in Greenfield.
Raffle prizes included a train simulator ride with Simon Dalby and The First Trans Pennine Express, an MOT voucher with Bryn Hilton’s Garage, and a £25 meat voucher with Paul’s Meats Uppermill.
Other lucky winners claimed a meal for two at the Farrar’s Arms, a basket of Saddleworth Cheeses from ex Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson, a Neil Mellor meat voucher, a £25 voucher Hei Hei Uppermill, a large pie, (cooked by Wayne Rawstron at the Wellington), and a DIY voucher with Tom and Son.
