Students celebrate another successful GCSE year at Saddleworth School

SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL pupils and staff are celebrating another great year of GCSE results as grades are in line with last year.

An impressive 72 per cent of pupils at the secondary school gained a C grade or better in English while 75 per cent achieved the same standard in mathematics.

And 24 per cent of pupils received the English Baccalaureate certificate, which includes maths, English, a language, two sciences and a humanities GCSE.

PLEASED: Students celebrate their results

Headteacher Matthew Milburn said: “We are pleased the results appear to be broadly in line with predictions.

“This is reassuring given the volatility of marking and movement of grade boundaries over the last couple of years.

“On first analysis it looks as though over 70 per cent of pupils will have made expected progress or better

“Results in key areas such as maths, English, geography, RE, ICT, art, PE, music, drama and dance are particularly pleasing.”

Wonderful successes achieved by individuals include Hannah Williams, who achieved nine A*s, two A grades, an AS level in critical thinking and an additional maths qualification and Emily Hall who achieved nine A*s, two A grades and an additional maths qualification.

Other successful students include Lucy Brewster, who received seven A*s and four A grades; Rhianna Bangham, who achieved five A*s, five A grades, one B grade, an AS level in critical thinking and an additional maths qualification and William Brook and Katie Douglas who both achieved three A*s, five A grades, two B grades and an additional maths qualification.

The school has been well scrutinised in the last 12 months with team visits from teams to inspect the staff, pupils and teaching standards.

Last November inspectors found Maths provision to be “Good” then in February the whole school was judged “Good” by a team that included two of Her Majesties Inspectors and three others.

Mr Milburn added: “We know we are not perfect and are striving to address areas for improvement.

“These latest GCSE results coupled with the inspection outcomes should provide good evidence the school is in a strong position as we move towards the establishment of the new school building.”
