Home Instead Senior Care joined forces with Millercare mobility specialists for their annual ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ project to collect gifts for older people who otherwise might not receive one this festive season.

Tesco Extra in Oldham proudly displayed official ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ Christmas trees in December and the public was invited to donate items including socks and slippers, biscuits, puzzles, diaries, photo frames, and calendars.

And the help of local charities and organisations including Dr. Kershaw’s Hospice, AGE UK Oldham,Oldham Library, and the Warm Front Housing Scheme helped identify older people to receive the beautifully wrapped presents.

Two local chemists also got involved and their prescription delivery drivers delivered gifts to their housebound clients in time for Christmas.

Mick Sheehan, Owner of Home Instead, said: “Our clients are assured of regular company from their caregivers but we hope Be a Santa to a Senior’ will allow us to reach out to older people in our community who, perhaps, don’t receive as many visitors and would really appreciate knowing local people are thinking about them this Christmas.

“We are delighted with the way in which members of the local community have embraced this scheme and how everyone has worked together to make it happen. As a result we received 224 presents!

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Millercare and Tesco Extra in Oldhamwho made the purchase of gifts possible and to all the organisations involved for their help.

“We really enjoy running the ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ scheme and will strive to make it even more successful next year.”
