by Carl Royle

DETERMINED STUDENTS took on a 17km trek on one of the hottest days of the year so far to raise more than £2,100 for charity.

268 Year 8 students from Saddleworth School joined 34 staff members on the sponsored walk on June 30 around the area, finishing at Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield.

The aim of the walk was to raise money for The Nepal Earthquake Appeal and a school fund that improves learning experiences for children.

Teacher Gary Pollard said: “To see 300 children and staff marching through stunning scenery was truly inspiring.”

One student commented: “This is the best school day ever!”

Brilliant sunshine and blue skies helped make a splendid day for all and a special thanks goes to Tesco for providing much-needed water for the day.

Members of the public were delighted to see so many children out enjoying the magnificent countryside and some even donated money on the spot, with £2,100 raised so far.
