Teacher becomes personal trainer to bring exciting exercise to locals

FITNESS CAN be fun and interesting for people of all ages and abilities – insists a Mossley man who has called time on a teaching career to help Saddleworth residents keep in shape.

Personal trainer Richard Lockett, 37, launched his own fitness business Fit2U in May after leaving his post as a Sixth Form student manager in Huddersfield.

And with one-to-one sessions at people’s homes as well as bootcamp-style classes for individuals, groups and families, he hopes to cater for all ages, sizes and abilities.

Richard, who is also a qualified fitness instructor, said: “I aim to differ from conventional fitness options by bringing the gym to individuals in the convenience of their own homes.

“I am also currently hosting ‘bootcamp-style’ sessions and from September I will be running parent-child fitness after-school sessions at Dobcross School.

“It’s a big career change but recently, it dawned on me I had been working in education for 20 years and I couldn’t imagine doing another 20.

“I invested a lot of money just as I found out my girlfriend is pregnant so there’s a lot of things going on! But she said I still had to do it and her support has been unbelievable.

“I have always loved going to the gym on my own but I know that’s not for everyone so I offer group sessions too.

“It is a lifestyle choice to keep fit and exercise regularly and it can start at any age. I have seen young children whose health is getting worse and worse and that is very scary.”

The Saddleworth Independent went along to one of Richard’s bootcamp sessions to find out what he has to offer.

The hour-long session started with a gentle jog and warm-up stretch, before launching into a circuit of varied exercises to target all parts of the body.

Short stints on each activity, which include boxing a punch bag, weights, lifting a medicine ball, and squats, were perfectly timed to tone and stretch the body rather than tire out.

And with Richard offering advice and help to individuals, the atmosphere was a friendly and encouraging one that helped each person get the most out of the session.

Richard added: “You get out from the exercising what you put in so if you work hard it will pay off. I’m not going to push people and everyone can work at their own speed.”

Richard runs bootcamp style classes Dobcross School sports ground on Saturday mornings from 7am-8am-, 8am-9am, and 9am-10am, as well as 7.30pm-8.30pm on Wednesdays. Each session cost £4 per person on the day.
