Stepping out for charity

By Carl Royle

A KEEN walker is putting his best foot forward as he takes part in a 20 mile sponsored walk for charity.

Jason Dean, 32, of Greenfield, will take part in the ‘Paws for a Walk’ challenge in North Yorkshire this month to raise money for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. P11 Jason Dean

A conductor with First TransPennine Express, Jason said: “Hearing Dogs For Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence in training dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger signals in the home, work place and public buildings.

“I’m taking part because I love the challenge of the 20 mile walk and I believe it’s for a great cause.

“I am walking with Callie, a German Shepherd who I borrow for walks from a friend who lives in Greenfield as it would be unfair if I left a dog at home all day as I work long shifts.

“Callie and I will love the walk in North Yorkshire and would like to thank all our sponsors.”

Walkers across the country will be taking part in 12 walks throughout September to raise money for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People.

The national charity helps train deaf adults and children with their dogs, who alert their recipients to household sounds, alarm clocks, door bells etc, by touching them with a paw or nose.

The dogs, which include labradors, golden retrievers, cocker spaniels, and miniature poodles, are even taught to lie down to indicate danger signals such as smoke alarms.
