Tesco counters to go part-time

CUSTOMERS in Saddleworth will find a counter at Tesco supermarket open only on a part-time basis after the shopping giant decided to cut its hours of operation.

The firm has been considering the future of a number of departments as it looks to cut costs.

And the store in Greenfield has not escaped the shake-up with its counters at the bottom end of the premises remaining open but with reduced opening hours.

Other stores in the area are also being affected, with the supermarket in Stalybridge seeing its fish, meat and hot deli counters operating on a part-time basis. Its cold deli counter will close completely.

However, at the Tesco Extra store in Hattersley all will be closing.

Tesco says it is making the decision as customers have less time available to shop too, meaning they are using counters less frequently.

Staff caught up in the changes will be helped out, with redeployment opportunities wherever possible being offered.

And the closure or part closure of counters will not reduce the range of products available to shoppers.

A Tesco spokesman said: “Following a recent review we are making changes to the counters offer at a number of stores.

“We have been communicating the changes within each store to customers and have been supporting those colleagues affected.”
