The sweet smell of coffee

A HAVEN for coffee lovers has opened in the heart of Uppermill to bring exciting flavours from around the world to Saddleworth at a fraction of the usual price.

Decorated with coffee sacks, authentic tea chests and jars of beans from floor to ceiling, Buckley’s Yard is a unique and welcoming spot nestled inside Buckleys2 bakers shop on New Street.

And owner Brian Hockenhull, who launched the venture just before Christmas, says customers are already delighted by his coffee, which is ground, roasted and brewed before their eyes.

He explained: “We’re what you’d call a Third Wave coffee bar – I offer freshly roasted, ground and brewed coffee and that’s going back to what people really want.

“People are getting fed up with commercialised chains but I give the true taste of real coffee made in front of customers for a decent price.

“It’s just £1 for a cup of coffee or 50p for tea. I do not see why a drink should cost any more. It doesn’t taste any better if you pay more for it.”

With a range of coffee beans from around the world, as well as tea or fruit infusions, Brian has something to suit everyone’s tastebuds.

He sells around 30-40 different types of coffee beans from places including Ethiopia, the Galapagos Islands, Vietnam, Rwanda, Mexico, Kilimanjaro, Brazil, Costa Rica and India.

There are also 15 flavoured coffee beans to choose from, such as French vanilla, death by chocolate and Christmas pudding.

For tea-drinkers, a choice of traditional teas, fruit and herbal drinks and infusions are available, including ginger, green, lemon, liquorice, apple, and earl grey.

And to show customers how their coffee is made, Brian holds roasting demonstrations on Saturdays, and hopes to hold Ethiopian-style tea ceremonies this summer.

Brian, a former accountant and IT specialist, said: “At the moment I’m specialising in coffee from Ethiopia as it’s some of the best in the world.

“Also, I source mine from farmers in co-operatives so I know they are getting something back and being looked after.”

Customers can take home a flavour of Brian’s coffee too as he sells jars and gift boxes, which can be made up of your choice of coffee, tea or fruit infusions.

And he has just recruited Gareth Cotteril, morning DJ from Tameside Radio, to help out for a few hours a week – joking he is the new ‘celebrity barista’.

And ambitious Brian, who set up his first coffee shop in Ashton Market 18 months ago, plans to eventually take his business online and sell beans based on the same price principles.

Buckley’s Yard is open from 11am-1.30pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. For more information contact Brian on 07973 155030 or email buckleysyarduppermill@gmail.com
