A STRETCH of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath in Saddleworth is now more user friendly for people with disabilities thanks to an award winning community group.
And the work of Street Scene Greenfield received the ‘thumbs up’ from one local resident present at a ‘topping off’ ceremony to mark the end of nearly 18 months’ work.
A turning area for disability scooters has been provided on the towpath between Hall’s Lock (L20W) and Uppermill High Street.
Greenfield local Barry Carr was the first scooter user to benefit from the extra room and helped toast Street Scene volunteers and Canal and River Trust staff after the final rail, engraved by local joiner, Phil Barker, was nailed in place.
To mark the occasion and Street Scene’s recent recognition of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the Group celebrated with a glass of bubbly provided by staff from Tesco who attended the event.
Then, it was off to Well-i-hole at Friezland for more fence repairs.
