ALAN SQUIRES, the most decorated local amateur golfer, is recovering from a serious illness.
The Saddleworth Golf Club member had surgery towards the end of last month to remove a kidney.
Alan had been off work for two months before the operation and the illness brought a premature end to what ought to have been a hectic end to the season.
One of Britain’s top players with three English seniors’ titles to his name, the 64-year-old missed three major events.
- The English Seniors’ County Championship in which Lancashire finished runners-up at RAC Club, Epsom.
- The European Seniors in Hungary where England finished third.
- The Home Internationals in Ireland.
Alan hopes to be back in action early next year and all the local golfing community wishes him a speedy recovery.
MEANWHILE at Saddleworth, the Schofield Shield was the last major competition of the season.
Winners of the four-ball Stableford were Malcolm Stott and Roger Devy who amassed 78 points.
Runners-up were Steve Pullen and David Hewitt (75pts) on the card from Philip Paxford and Danny Guerriero.
Elsewhere, Gary Simpson was the winner of his own Captain’s Charity Day.
Partnered by immediate past captain Tim Edwards, they amassed 47 points in the four-ball Stableford.
They finished well clear of runners-up Mark Woodhead and Colin Campbell (43pts) while third place went to David Stephens and John Parker (42).
The Village Shield was won by a team representing Uppermill and Greenfield with a total of 140 points.
The team comprised Tony Isaacs, whose 40 points made him the individual victor, Kin Mills, Nick Marner and Ultan McGovern.
