Tour de… Saddleworth

SADDLEWORTH IS gearing up with a host of exciting French and cycling-themed events ahead of the world’s biggest cycle competition coming to the north-west in July.

A whimsical touch of yesteryear will be brought to the area’s winding lanes with a ‘Tour de Tweed’ nostalgic trip on bicycles on Saturday, June 28.

Led by Philip Pearson, the group will mount bicycles from the 1920s and 30s for a gentle ramble starting at the White Hart Lydgate at 2pm.

Stops along the route will be at Java in Uppermill, The Diggle Hotel, the Swan Inn in Dobcross and the White Lion in Delph before finishing at The Royal Oak at Heights above Delph.

The event is in aid of MS Society and suggested donation for entrants is £10. Entry forms will be posted at Heights and Uppermill Post Office.

Meanwhile, at the Swan Inn in Dobcross, a play ‘Life Cycle’ by Adam Sunderland will be performed on Wednesday, July 9 to celebrate the Tour de France as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival.

The one-person show is about a cyclist looking back at his life and uses verbatim interviews with champion cyclists to create a fascinating piece. Tickets available from the Swan Inn and their website.

Elsewhere, St Mary’s Church in Greenfield invites you to Le Petit Marché at St Mary’s School on Sunday, June 29 from 12noon to 4pm.

The mouth-watering French-themed event will include a bar, boulangerie, café, charcuterie, degustation de vins, fromagerie, les glaces, patisserie and a tombola.

The Tour de France, The Grand Depart, takes place on Saturday, July 5 with the first stage from Leeds to Harrogate then the following day Sunday, July 6, Sheffield to York.
