TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to community champion and former Saddleworth Parish councillor Mrs Dorothy Mary Shaw OBE who died aged 91 on May 30, 2014.
Born in Mossley on 31 March, 1923 and educated at Manchester High School, Mrs Shaw found her passion for teaching physical education and art.
She taught at Lakes Road High School for Girls, became duty head at St. Anne’s Lydgate and later head of Cooper Street Junior School, Springhead.
She was a Liberal Democrat Councillor on Saddleworth Parish Council for more than 32 years, during which time she was chairman, and received a long service award in March 2013.
Mrs Shaw represented Springhead Lower Ward for 20 years and, after moving to Uppermill, was a councillor for Diggle and Dobcross for eight years.

For many years she worked to support Chris Davies, Liberal Democrat MEP, and in 1996 she received an OBE for dedicated community service.
Cllr John Hudson, Oldham’s retiring Mayor and Saddleworth Parish Council’s longest serving member, was taught by Mrs Shaw’s husband, Ellis.
He said: “She was a very good worker for the Liberal Democrats, I am really saddened they have lost a trouper and she was also a defender of Saddleworth against Oldham.”
OMBC Cllr Graham Sheldon and Saddleworth Parish Council’s retiring chairman, said: “She is a great loss to the community.
“She was a tireless worker and was involved until a few weeks ago. She had a great passion and fought hard for affordable homes for younger people.”
Mrs Shaw enjoyed painting, music, walking and started the ‘Ladies Who Lunch Tuesday’s’ which went towards the Lib Dems fight and supporting Saddleworth Parish Council Charity Committee each year.
She leaves a daughter, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
