SADDLEWORTH’S LEGENDARY Beer Walk was kept alive by nostalgic followers who completed an unofficial 11-mile route around the area’s pubs.
The original Beer Walk was scrapped three years ago after taking place for 38 years to help charity fundraising.
But a team of stalwarts, many who took part the official walk over the years, decided to keep their passion for the colourful community event alive.
They were headed by Justin Brown, 45, and his sister Angie, who runs ladies’ hair salons in Greenfield and Mossley.
The dynamic duo encouraged other locals on Facebook to join in and more than 80 fun-loving revellers took part in the third unofficial Beer Walk.
And their mother Denise shared their enthusiasm this year by joining them dressed as brightly-coloured orange and white traffic cones.
Justin, a joiner from Delph, said: “We had a fantastic day. The weather was perfect and all the walkers had a brilliant time.
“Only locals knew about our walk because we want to keep Saddleworth traditions alive.
“It was a great success and I think the event will snowball and keep on growing every year.
“Everyone who turned up came to enjoy themselves.I think people really appreciated seeing the different creative fancy dress and themes some of the teams adopted.
“We got lots of favourable comments from passersby and drivers sounded their horns in encouragement.
“There was absolutely no trouble – everyone came for a good time. They were all locals and we plan to keep it that way.”
Some of the eye-catching costumes included The Village People, rock stars of the 80s and outfits representing the countries in the World Cup.
