COUNTRYSIDE-LOVING volunteers have been improving their skills by transforming a number of local nature sites, including Moorgate Quarry in Saddleworth.

Two groups of volunteers both completed the work as part of 12-week Practical Countryside Skills programmes run by Groundwork, which equips volunteers with a range of skills in outdoor conservation.
These skills are practised and put to good use through improvements to local nature sites, such as Moorgate Quarry.
At the site, the hard-working groups helped to improve the footpath network by building steps and stiles in the disused quarry, which has now been reclaimed by nature.
The groups also completed projects at Brownhill Countryside Centre in Uppermill, Daisy Nook Country Park, Fullwood Nature Site in East Oldham and Jubilee Nature Site in Shaw.
Dustie Hickey, one of the volunteers, said: “It was an amazing time spent with really lovely people. It was wonderful to find new places that I never knew existed.”
Throughout the programme each team member works towards a Level 1 certificate in Practical Countryside Skills and receives support with their CV and next steps.
Matthew Lynwood, programme leader from Groundwork, said: “The group should be very proud of their achievements.
“Their work will allow more people to access and enjoy the excellent green spaces in our local area.”
