Around 50 pupils have signed up for a trip to watch the SSE Women’s FA Cup at the National Stadium on Saturday, May 4.

To ensure it is a day to remember, the Sam Road school held a sponsored car wash on March 2.

Drivers were asked to pay £5 and that included a free cup of tea or coffee. There was a separate cake sale to boost funds.

Football-loving teacher Leanne Hazelhurst, a Manchester City season ticket holder and one-time Rochdale FC mascot, has organised the Wembley day out and the car wash.

She said: “The current figure for profit made is around £450 but we are still receiving donations so this total could increase.

“We would like to thank everyone involved in the event as well as the many local people who came to have their cars washed by us.

“We believe we washed between 70-80 cars on the day which was amazing.”

“I love football and think it’s good to promote the women’s game,” added Leanne, who previously had trials for Curzon Ashton ladies.

“I read that the women’s FA Cup final is the most family friendly football occasion.

“I thought I would see if there would be any interest and 50 children, both girls and boys, will be going to Wembley in May which is fantastic.”

The competition is currently at the quarter-final stage and could see a Manchester derby final.
