YOU CAN take the girl out of the Saddleworth, but you can’t take Saddleworth out of the girl…
That’s certainly the case for Barbara Maycock, nee Walton, who was born and bred in Saddleworth but now lives on the Suffolk coast near Thorpeness.
Her mother Alice Walton, who lives at Kenworthy Gardens in Uppermill and has never left Saddleworth, sends her the Independent so she can keep up-to-date with what’s happening at ‘home’.
Barbara is pictured here by ‘The House in the Clouds’ and she explained: “Thorpeness is a tiny village with a big history!
“It was the first purpose-built holiday resort in the world, built in the early years of the 20th century by the Ogilvy family.
“The House in the Clouds was the carefully hidden water tower for the whole area. It has now been converted to a holiday home like all the other houses in the village.”
She added: “It would make my mum’s day to see me in the paper, so if you can find space you’ll make a ‘Delpher’ very happy!”
