SPECIAL MOMENTS are captured regularly in the Saddleworth Independent…
And friends Dawn Alexander-Mills and Karen Butler celebrated one of their own with a copy of thepopular newspaper as they enjoyed Dawn’s 50th birthday in Cape-Verde.
Dawn, pictured left, who works at Buckley’s bakers in Uppermill and lives in Springhead, and Karen, who lives in Grotton, enjoyed the getaway with their partners.
Meanwhile, a Grasscroft couple swapped their copy of the Saddleworth Independent for the Washington Post as they witnessed first-hand history being made in America.
Don and Patricia Hancock were holidaying in Washington when the US government shut down for 16 days, driving the nation toward the brink of default.
But President Barack Obama signed a bill to raise the $16.7 trillion debt limit and reopen federal agencies and Don, pictured here, has kept his morning paper as a reminder of the event.

During their trip, the couple, who first went to America in the 1970s, also visited Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon.
Don said: “The cemetery is one of those rare places where you just get a lump in your throat. There is so much respect for the dead there.
“A great thing about the country is meeting different races from all over the world. One of our servers at the hotel was from India and when he heard me asking about the cricket score he just wanted to talk to me about the game.”
