SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL’S year 10 rugby team maintained its 100-per-cent start to the season with two further victories in the North West Carnegie Champion Schools’ competition.
They kicked off with an impressive 44-4 victory at Cansfield High School, Wigan, where they scored eight tries and six conversions in a fantastic team group-game display.
Special mentions to Gabriel Payne and Lewis Smethurst who scored a brace of tries each and to Josh Fitzgerald for his player-of-the-match performance from full back.
Next up in the competition was Cowley School, St Helens, who they demolished 42-0 with Lewis Smethurst the outstanding player.
Tries from Smethurst, (2), Josh Fitzgerald, (2), Tom Whitehead, Joe Howe, Evan Parry and Gabriel Payne and five goals from the boot of Jack Kenway left Saddleworth sitting proudly at the top of their group.
A home quarter-final tie will now follow in the competition with one more win required to qualify for the prestigious National Cup as one of only four entries from the North West.
