TALENTED YOUNG musicians are raising the roof at Saddleworth School with a variety of different events.
The school hosted the 120-strong Yorkshire Youth Brass Band for the first time in Februaryand March for courses including sectionals, rehearsals and a question and answer development session.
The repertoire included James Curnow’s Jubilation, Goff Richards’ Doyen, and Alan Fernie’s Prismatic Light and also featured young composer Jonathan Bates, conducting his Citius, Altius, Fortius.
The course, directed by Professor Nicholas Childs while Richard Marshall led the tutorial staff, is always guaranteed good fun and this time attracted 15 new members.
The sessions were held ahead of their performance at Leeds Town Hall as part of the Black Dyke Brass Festival on Sunday, May 17.
Matthew Milburn, Saddleworth School headteacher, said: “I am genuinely excited to see the young musicians take advantage of the opportunity to perform with this wonderful organisation.
“I look forward to seeing and hearing the band in action very soon.”

Garrath Beckwith, Head of Music at the school, added: “This is fantastic opportunity for the young brass musicians to develop their skills with the incredible instrumental tutors of the world famous Black Dyke Band.
“Hosting the YYBB is a really exciting project for the area and the school – we are all really looking forward to future developments.”
Meanwhile, students of all ages took to the stage to compete in the school’s annual Battle of the Bands competition.
After all of the groups, bands and singers had performed – including a special performance from last year’s winners – judges named the 2015 winners as the GCSE Year 10 group.
