GOLDEN-HEARTED youngsters have been praised for sacrificing part of their summer holidays to raise money for charity.
The children, working in separate groups, painstakingly made scores of colourful bracelet loop bands which they have turned into cash for Doctor Kershaw’s Hospice.
Twins Aimee and Ashleigh Garlick, aged ten, and their friend Jazmine Pogson, six, set up a stall to sell the bands outside Lees Library after a friend’s mother recently died of cancer.
The girls are all pupils at St Thomas Leesfield and Jazmine’s mother Zoe, said: “It was entirely the girls’ own idea to do something positive in support of the charity.
“They were deeply touched by their friend’s loss and wanted to show their support.”
Michelle Garlick added: “We are very proud of them all. They have done a terrific job and we are grateful for the public really getting behind the idea.”
Meantime, brothers Harry and Oliver Meeking, grandsons of hospice volunteer Peter Meeking, contributed £100 from their loop band efforts.
And the initiative by the two groups has been praised by Doctor Kershaw’s fund raising manager, Lisa Pearson.
She said: “It is great the younger generation is being encouraged to give up their own time to raise funds.
“The age of the children raising money this way is really heartening – they are part of a new generation of fund-raisers.
“The loop band donations are a lovely idea. It’s really good youngsters are making such an effort to support us.”
“We couldn’t continue our work without the support of our volunteers and community.”
