Saddleworth’s year nine basketball team are the new Oldham schools’ champions after they defeated Radclyffe, Crompton House, Hulme and Bluecoat at Kaskenmoor Ball Hall.
Unbeaten in all six of their matches, the team was triumphant in the final against Radclyffe 20-12.
Thirteen boys represented the school with credit on the afternoon, with several making their debuts, while five year 10 GCSE students ably assisted as referees throughout the tournament.
Saddleworth’s year eight rugby team failed in their bid to be crowned North West schools’ champions.
After doing heroically to reach the final at the Select Security Stadium, Widnes, Saddleworth lost 26-10 to a strong Wade Deacon outfit on North West schools’ finals day.
The team faced an uphill battle from the second minute after conceding a try and despite scores of their own from Gabriel Payne and Lucas Clarke, Saddleworth never recovered or reached their usual level of play.
Fenton Rogers produced some sterling work in attack and defence but ultimately it was the home-based side that emerged triumphant retaining the title they had won in year seven.

And there was also disappointment for Saddleworth KS4 girls who were beaten in the Greater Manchester School Games badminton final.
A fantastic achievement by Emma Brewster, Tara Phethean, Daisy Shepherdson and Grace Malone to reach this final after a full day of competition, winning their group and then quarter and semi finals before they were beaten by Failsworth in an all Oldham final.
The year nine rugby team progressed to the second round of the Carnegie Schools’ National Competition with a scintillating 62-4 victory against Q3 Academy from the Midlands.
At a blustery JMO Sports Centre, Skelmersdale, Saddleworth produced a professional display to outclass their relatively inexperienced opponents.
Sam Thackeray was in unstoppable form as he dazzled the defence to touch down on five occasions in a player-of-the-match performance.
Will Marston weighed in with a hat-trick of tries and Brandon Turner, Tom Sefton, Charlie Hartley and Jacob Butterworth were others to get over the whitewash. Sam Thackeray added three conversions to complete the rout.
A home tie will be next up for the team as they entertain visitors from London or Wales depending on results elsewhere.
