A SPRINGHEAD woman who has clocked up 100 hours volunteering says young people have given her the most precious gift of all – smiles and laughter.

Ingrid Barker runs the busy café at Mahdlo, Oldham’s youth zone, every Saturday morning, preparing and serving healthy snacks and tasty treats for 8-16 year olds.

While she originally thought she could make a difference for her community, she didn’t expect to become a firm favourite at the centre and have young people lining up eagerly to see what’s on the menu.

Ingrid says: “I give my time but the young people here give me so much more, it’s absolutely wonderful to see them develop and get to know the characters at the centre”.

Vicky Richardson, Mahdlo’s Volunteer Coordinator, added:  “Local people like Ingrid make such a difference for young people in the borough.

“Her kindness, patience and humour make her a huge favourite at the centre – and her cookies are pretty fantastic too.

“The gift of time is the most valuable thing that Oldham’s residents can give this New Year.  Mahdlo welcomes volunteers from all walks of life and with no age restrictions – enthusiasm and a desire to help are all that’s required.”

If you could spare some time to help deliver activities, assist in the cafe or help behind the scenes please contact Mahdlo’s Volunteer Coordinator Vicky: 0161 624 0111 or vicky.richardson@mahdloyz.org for more information.
