Why did you become a CAREGiver?

I had my son and found the working hours were flexible to fit in with my family life. I began working with clients in the evenings and weekends. After becoming a mum I found I needed to do something worthwhile to take me away from the day-to-day routine of motherhood and family life just for a few hours.

What do you enjoy about being a CAREGiver?

I supported my clients every evening and alternate weekends. I began to build relationships with them and they became pleased to see me arrive each day to spend an hour with them.

My clients became my friends and I looked forward to visiting them each day. I found myself thinking of things they might like to do while I was there.

I enjoyed the appreciation from family because they knew I was taking care of their relative which gave them piece of mind.

What’s your ‘stand out’ memory of being a CAREgiver?

There are so many but one was taking a client with dementia to a weekly Aqua class. The client couldn’t remember the previous week, so it was a new and enjoyable experience for her every time. I’ll always remember that look of joy on her face!

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in care?

If you have caring bones and want to help and make a difference then become a Home Instead CAREGiver. Don’t worry about specific knowledge, experience or training… this can be taught. Being able to CARE is part of who you are; just go for it!

Is there anything else you would like to add about being a CAREGiver with Home Instead?

Building up my own client base made me feel more valued as a person. I was assigned clients I could work well with; it’s not just a ‘round’ that needs covering.

  1. I did some work with Home Instead last year, and I found them an impressive organisation. We did a joint presentation for families about how to understand and support people with dementia. I was most impressed by the refusal of Home Instead to bid for contracts with councils which ask for 15 minute appointments. I hope they keep that up.
