Award-winning Street Scene Greenfield take on more towpath

THE AWARD-WINNING Street Scene Greenfield Group is extending their hard work across the community as they adopt a further stretch of the Huddersfield Canal tow path to rejuvenate.

The volunteers were named the Manchester and Pennine Volunteer Group of the Year in 2014 for their efforts cleaning debris, cutting back vegetation and resurfacing the towpath between Division Bridge and Wade Locks.

Now, they are adopting another stretch from Hall’s Lock to Wade Lock in Uppermill as part of the ‘Adopt a Canal’ initiative launched by the Canal and River Trust to tidy up their waterways.

Work will be carried out on both sections over the project days held each month, organised by Gill McCulley, which have seen volunteers dedicate more than 300 hours and lay around 80 tonnes of stone.

Along with their usual tasks, SSGG has also planted snowdrops, bluebells and aconites along the way, with some extra kindly donated free of charge from suppliers YouGarden.

And the Canal and River Trust have now obtained permission from United Utilities to access their land opposite Saddleworth Rangers Rugby Club, which will enable stone to be stored there for future use and more easily accessed.

Meanwhile, SSGG, which is a subgroup of the Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents Association, has also helped keep the village picturesque by carrying out three litter picks – collecting 65 bags of rubbish – throughout the year.

Their next litter pick will take place on Saturday, April 11 from 10am-12noon and volunteers should meet at Boarshurst Band Club.

All equipment is provided and everyone is welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Tesco’s will kindly supply refreshments afterwards in Boarshurst Band Club.

Speaking at GGRA’s AGM, SSGG co-ordinator Peter Lowe said: “I want to thank all the volunteers for their hard work over the year and all the organisations and groups we’ve worked with.

“They have worked like stalwarts through the year and made a big improvement to the community.”
