CYCLING FEVER is already gripping the nation as thousands decorate their homes and businesses and prepare to fill the streets to watch the prestigious Tour de France kick off in Yorkshire on July 5.

And for those who have caught the bug, Saddleworth Clarion Cycling Club is launching a series of local easy, fun taster cycle rides to welcome people of all ages and abilities to the sport.
With no training, racing or lycra, the ‘Just Bring Your Bike’ road rides focus on relaxed, social riding at a slower pace and will take place on the last Saturday of each month around Saddleworth.
The rides will begin and end at Java Café in Uppermill and a ride leader will guide the eight-mile loop twice – anyone tired after one loop can finish – and will dismount to push up one slight hill on the route.
Stephen Carson, a member of the club who has helped to organise the rides, said: “Cycling is growing in popularity and locally we have some of the best territory in the country.
“We understand many people are put off by the idea of lycra, hills, fast rides and just not being fit enough. It can be difficult to find a place for newer cyclists to join in.
“We are seeking to actively open up club riding to the less experienced and have targeted these road rides at the newcomer to cycling.
“We have lots of challenging roads in the area but sometimes cycling should just be fun, social and relaxing.
“We hope it takes off so we can take it through into the winter and organise more rides for people to get involved with.”
The first ride will take place on Saturday, June 28 at 9.30am, meeting at 9am, and riders just need to bring a bike, money for coffee and maybe a spare inner tube. Helmets are advised.
Riders do not need to be a Club member to take part in the rides but can join if they wish. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Saddleworth Clarion is run by local cyclists for riders looking to develop their abilities, skills and interests in the company of others. They enjoy both off and on-road cycles at recreational and competition levels.
