Daughter inspired to tackle Great Wall of China for charity

GEORGINA BUCKLEY was crying with pain only 30 minutes after stepping onto the Great Wall of China for the first time…

And the Diggle businesswoman shed tears again after stepping off the 13,170-mile long structure for the final occasion.

CHALLENGE: On the wall

Georgina, 29, and her stepdad Chris, 49, did not walk the entire length of the 2,300-year-old Wall but in seven days saw enough to get a flavour of the world’s biggest ancient architectural wonder.

“I loved every minute of it, even when I was struggling,” said Georgina, licensee of the Mossley’s newly opened, Caffe Aurora.

“I was in tears after the first half hour because I couldn’t believe it was so steep. No amount of training could have prepared me for some of the climbs.

“Then there were the blisters, sun burn, insect bites: I hate insects. But on the last day I wanted to do more. I couldn’t imagine coming off for the final time.”

The pair’s trek was all for a good cause as they raised more than £6,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, inspired by Georgina’s father, Simon Buckley, who is an MS sufferer.

And they could be off on another trip next year as Georgina explained: “There were 14 of us on the walk and we made some great friends. So, there’s talk of doing something else, possibly to Marrakech.”
