A SPECIAL ceremony was held for a popular Scouthead landlord who has been pulling pints for 37 years.
Ray Hicks, who runs the Three Crowns with wife Sue, was honoured with an award from CAMRA’s Rochdale, Oldham and Bury (ROB) branch as their longest serving licensee.

This year CAMRA is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the award was one of a number of events and presentations organised to mark the occasion.
Guests gathered at the pub on Huddersfield Road for the presentation before enjoying an impressive buffet and a pint on the house.
After receiving the certificate, Ray joked: “You wouldn’t get 37 years for murder!
“But honestly, I appreciate this very much and thank you. A lot of water has gone under the bridge over the years and we’ve had ups and downs but overall it has been wonderful.”
Ray began his life as a landlord in Oldham in 1976 before moving to the Three Crowns in 1978, where he has been ever since.
Graham Chinn, a founding member of CAMRA’s ROB branch, said: “Despite notices being put out, we couldn’t find anyone who has been a licensee longer than Ray.
“Knowing how the industry changes quickly today, it is quite remarkable that Ray is still here after 37 years.
“In recognition of the splendid service he has given over the years I am proud to present him with this certificate.”
Ken Holt, another founding member of the ROB branch who lives in Uppermill, was among the well-wishers.
He added: “In the early days Ray had a link with CAMRA as he facilitated the licence for the first beer festivals held in the 70s at the Civic Hall in Uppermill.
“In the current era when many pubs change hands with monotonous regularity Ray has consistently provided good service, ale and food in a traditional pub atmosphere.”
CAMRA – The Campaign for Real Ale – is an independent organisation which promotes real ale, real cider and the traditional British pub. Find out more online: www.camra.org.uk
