WHISTLER: Dave Morris

The whistling oyster has become a visitors’ favourite since the opening of the Advertising Exhibit this year to celebrate their famous adverts of the early 1930s.

And Dave was given a VIP reception when he visited Ireland’s capital and hosted a special whistling masterclass for delighted visitors at the country’s number one visitor attraction.

He told the audience: “I have always been able to whistle – it used to be my party trick but now I whistle for my job.

“It is fantastic the Guinness Storehouse is celebrating the art of whistling through the permanent feature of the Whistling Oyster exhibit.

“It has a special place in the rich heritage of Guinness advertising. I was delighted to bring the archive ad to life and give the Whistling Oyster a catchy tune to surprise and amuse visitors.”

Dave also showed visitors how to perfect their whistling techniques before entertaining them with a special performance.

Visitors to the attraction can hear a repertoire of Dave’s tunes including The Rhythm of Life, I do like to be beside the Seaside, The William Tell overture finale and The Irish Washerwoman.

At the exhibit, visitors are also taken on a journey through a world of colourful toucans, white horses, zookeepers and clocks spanning more than eighty years of Guinness advertising.

Eibhlin Colgan, Archivist at the Guinness Storehouse, said: “The Whistling Oyster advertisement was originally created to celebrate the great flavour pairing of shellfish – especially oysters – and Guinness.

“We want visitors to not just see but really ‘experience’ the ads so we took the Whistling Oyster from its original print format and brought him to life as a giant animatronic oyster who whistles!’

Last year, Dave’s rousing version of ‘The Post Horn Gallop’ was picked to be the backing track to a TV commercial heralding the arrival of the latest BMW Mini.
