ENTERPRISING COUPLE: Carl and Farah Benton

Farah Benton will be mine host at The Hanging Gate in Diggle while husband Carl has just reopened the doors of Delph’s iconic White Lion a few miles away.

The historic pub, which dates back to the 18th century, was closed for several months but has now been revamped by owners Thwaites Brewery.

It boasts new hardwood flooring, a wood-burning stove in the snug, and the back room has been transformed into a dining area.

And chef Carl, 39, also plans to add ‘steak stones – steaks cooked on hot stones at the table – as well as install a wood-fired pizza oven outside the pub.

He said: “The freshly-baked pizzas have already proved a great success at the Hanging Gate and I’m sure they’ll go down well here with locals and new customers.

“I’m from Delph and I’m looking forward to developing good relationships with the community. I’m really excited about making the White Lion a good local pub again.”

Carl is also already working on a series of new initiatives and plans to introduce a ‘Beer, Brass and Barbecue’ event, launching with a charity fundraiser in June.

And he’s keeping the cooking a family affair because Farah’s mother, Pauline Wilson, will be joining him in the kitchen to prepare homemade, locally-sourced food.

Farah, 29 added: “Carl really surprised me when he announced he was taking on another pub – but we are both prepared to work hard to make the businesses work.

“We’ve had very encouraging support from both villages. Hopefully, we’ll still be able to get out for a meal between running the two pubs!”

And bosses from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have praised the couple’s initiative.

Pete Alexander, chairman of Rochdale, Oldham and Bury CAMRA branch, commented: “It is always encouraging when an existing landlord takes on a second pub, especially against a widespread background of pub closures.

“The White Lion is a splendid village local and  Delphers  can be assured of a great community asset to visit and enjoy a great pint of real ale.

“I wish Carl and Farah every success and look forward to popping in as soon as I can.”
