Saddleworth backs Sport Relief 2014

AS THE nation prepares to run, swim or cycle this month to raise money for Sport Relief, Saddleworth residents are making sure to get behind the worthy cause.

Runners will take on the Saddleworth Mile at Dovestone Reservoir, with the choice between a one, three or six mile run, on Sunday, March 23.

For swimmers, 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k is the distance to be taken on at Copley Sports Centre on Saturday, March 22.

And for cyclists there is a 25 mile or 50 mile ride starting at Old Trafford football ground, as well as a three mile family cycle, on Sunday, March 23.

CYCLING: Dave Wheeler

Saddleworth Independent reporter David Wheeler is busy practicing for the 50 mile cycle ride – despite not having ridden further than ten miles before Christmas.

David said: “I do not know what came over me when I said I would do the event, but I am training on the bike at weekends and in the gym during the week.

“I am really starting to enjoy it. I do feel a lot fitter and I must have lost weight as I have had to buy belts to hold my trousers up!”

Meanwhile Saddleworth Independent sports editor Tony Bugby will be putting himself through his paces that weekend at the Liverpool half marathon in preparation for London in April.

He said: “This will be my 23rd consecutive year doing London – and it doesn’t get any easier, in fact harder with advancing years! I am hoping to get up to 25.”
