A TRIO of youngsters turned their love of the outdoors into a fundraising challenge by doing a sponsored cycle of The Way of the Roses.

Elli Stanford, 19, from Greenfield, was joined by best friends Adam Wiseman, 20, from Mossley, and Jon Collum, 23, from Greenfield, on the 170-mile trip from Morecambe to Bridlington.
Their three-day ride was in aid of Cancer Research and The Christie, causes chosen as Elli’s mum – famed greengrocer Jill – is 17 years clear after suffering from breast cancer.
But another staff member is currently undergoing treatment and a family friend passed away last year, and Adam also picked the causes in memory of his granddad and uncle.
Manchester Met University student Elli aims to raise £300 per charity and admitted they trained hard in preparation – even though she has a ligament injury from playing football.
“We decided to do this route because of the Yorkshire-Lancashire debate around here, and there will also be lots of things to see along the trail, she added.
“We had no experience last year but this time we know what to expect. Sometimes, you get to the top of what feels like the biggest hill and there is another one waiting. But it’s something we enjoy doing.”
The team raised almost £800 last year on a similar cycle for Help for Heroes and Elli already has her eyes set on the Three Peaks Challenge and kayaking across the English Channel to continue their efforts.
Mum Jill said: “Cancer does not discriminate. I feel strongly about it and it’s so nice that young people get involved and have the motivation to want to do something.”
