Family business raises funds for British Legion

AS RESIDENTS across the borough commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One, a caring family-run textile company chose their own way of marking the event…

Parkin Fabrics, headed by David Parkin of Greenfield, decided that on the anniversary date – August 4 – they would donate 16% of their sales turnover – in recognition of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 – to the Royal British Legion.

More than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed in the Battle of the Somme, making it one of the largest and bloodiest battles ever.

David and one of his sons Nicholas presented a cheque for £250 to Arthur Hinchliffe, chairman of the Saddleworth Branch of the Royal British Legion, and Bernard King, vice chairman.

Arthur commented: “We are very grateful for this wonderful and generous donation from Parkin Fabrics.”
