Honour for top golfer

ALBERT ROGERSON views it as an honour for Saddleworth Golf Club after being elected President of the Lawrence Batley Seniors League.

“It is nice for Saddleworth to be represented and prestige for the golf club, ” explained the 77-year-old retired lecturer at Oldham College.

The Lawrence Batley Seniors League was formed in 1982 for players aged 55 years and over and today has 32 member clubs, mostly from Yorkshire.

Albert has a long association having played and captained Saddleworth’s team in the league over a 15-year period as well as being the club’s representative on the league’s committee.

A native of Cumbria, Albert began playing golf at Maryport and Silloth.

Albert, who lives in High Crompton, moved to Oldham and has been a member at Saddleworth since 1970 playing off a handicap as low as six. Today it is 16.

He is still working and has a company A & H Training Services which trains surveyors.

Albert’s wife Hazel is also a golfer and former captain at Saddleworth. She was also a former coach at Oldham Fencing Club and at one time managed Great Britain juniors.
