The 11.2 mile walk, organised by Saddleworth Round Table, raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local causes but was scrapped two years ago because of problems of drunkenness and violence.

Now, a high powered team from Round Table has launched Sadd Fest 13 featuring a dazzling line-up of local musical talent at the major new festival.

The initiative will see the bands, headlined by Twisted Wheel, perform at Saddleworth Rangers ground, Shaw Hall Bank Road, Greenfield, on Saturday, September 7.

The event, sponsored by The White Hart at Lydgate and at the Old Bell Inn, Delph, will also showcase beers and hospitality from ten pubs in the original Beer Walk route in special tents.

Musical entertainment will open with Schwing, headed by Saddleworth musician and publican Anthony Kinsey, who is also the festival’s musical director.

High Energy will provide swing and soul covers with five-piece Cabbage Alley playing funk, soul and jazz.

Phil Middleton ‘No Worries’ four piece will offer a range of pop, soul, covers and originals and the audience can expect an energetic set from  Baked ‘A LA’ SKA, a ten piece ska reggae outfit.

And The Gramatones, a young Oldham band, are expected to bring their big following to the event.

Dave MacDougall, the Beer Walk’s last chairman, who is spearheading the new festival, said: “Organisation is going very well with exciting new bands lined up for all tastes in music.

“Local businesses have supported us by sponsorship to ensure we can run the day safely and everyone can enjoy a great family time out with us.”

And Round Table chairman, Ian Eardley commented: “Enthusiasm from the local community has been overwhelming.

“The support and commitment from local businesses and the bands should make this a fantastic family day out, with good entertainment and plenty of excellent food and refreshments.

“The proceeds will ensure other regular events organised by Round Table will go ahead, including this year’s Winter Wonderland in Uppermill which was a huge success last year.”

Saddleworth Round Table are also working on another event but keeping its launch under wraps until later in the year.

Sadd Fest 13 starts at approx. noon and finishes no later than 7p.m on Saturday, September 7 in line with noise pollution and respect for the general public.
