New groups to raise funds for band club

WITH A combined age of more than 200 years old, the three band members of newly formed ‘Just Good Friends’ bring a wealth of experience and talent to the stage…

And the country music group will be entertaining locals in just their second gig this month in a bid to raise money for Boarshurst Band Club’s Fix That Roof fund.

Keith Thompson, 70, who plays guitar, formed the band only six months ago as he set about fulfilling his ambition of playing in a band.

He recruited singer Cath Horsfall, 59, and guitar player Jack Fitton, 75, to join him and after hard rehearsing they played their first show in Glossip last month.

Keith, who lives in Greenfield, explained: “When I retired at 65 I decided I wanted to play an instrument and although I don’t read music I decided to take up the guitar.

“I found Jack and Cath and stating rehearsing together – and now we’re performing and I’ve reached the fulfilment for a five-year dream for me.”

The group performs a mix of country music old and new, including popular songs from John Fogerty, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley.

Keith, who ran Chew Valley Country Music club for 12 years, added: “We decided to put on this concert in aid of the band club as they need a new flat roof on the part of the roof.

“My wife and I have been members of the club for more than 20 years and go there every Sunday for brass band concerts.

“We have had so much enjoyment from the club and want to give something back.”

Just Good Friends will play at Boarshurst Band Club on Greenbridge Lane in Greenfield on Saturday, 17 May. The concert starts 8.15pm and tickets cost £3 on the door (£2 for members).
