PUPILS FROM seven Saddleworth and Lees primary schools attended a pioneering ‘Sports Leadership’ event at Saddleworth School.
The event, the first of its kind held by Oldham Council, was attended by 50 primary aged children and 20 from secondary schools.
It provided an opportunity for the young ‘Sports Leaders’ to share their skills and experiences of sport in group discussion and practical demonstrations.
It was delivered by secondary school age pupils who are also being trained in how to use sport for the whole community.
Afterwards, the primary school Sport Leaders were lessons and talks about what they learned at their respective schools.
It meant they can help other pupils during break and lunch times, and increase pupils’ physical and mental wellbeing.
The Sport Leadership project is a first step to helping young residents become local leaders and encourage them to ‘do their bit’ for their community.
It will also help the attendees gain formal qualifications within a variety of sports settings, and help create a positive perception of young people in the borough.
Nitin Solanki, Sport Development Officer for Saddleworth and Lees, was delighted with the success of the event saying it is likely to be repeated.
