CARING RESIDENTS from Grasscroft, Lydgate and Grotton are urging others to help maintain the green and pleasant land alongside an iconic Saddleworth road.
The neighbours say the attractive grassy verges along Oldham Road, which are trimmed and tidied by OMBC as well as residents, are a real welcoming asset for the community.
In spring there is also a welcome flash of colour around the Lydgate crossroad area thanks to thousands of crocus planted by Love Lydgate volunteers.
But the neighbours fear the verges are at risk of vanishing into muddy, tyre-rutted grot spots thanks to inconsiderate parking of some residents and contractors.
John Heap, a Grasscroft resident, said: “Every time I walk or drive along Oldham Road I think how sad it is to see the damage done by a minority of inconsiderate residents and contractors.
“I am certainly not on my own in this consideration and collectively feel that it is time to make a stand or otherwise the problem is just going to get worse.”
Kath Hodges from Grotton Residents Association added: “This has a been a worry for a long time. Once you mention it to people they do park elsewhere – people are busy and don’t always think.”
They are urging residents to only park on the road or in driveways wherever possible, and to make sure contractors protect the verge or make good any damage afterwards.
Jennifer Greenwood, from Lydgate, added: “We worked so hard to plant the crocuses and many people have commented on how lovely they look.
“We all like to live in nice surroundings. I hope everyone will work together to make a difference.”
The trio will be monitoring the situation and report back later in the year, when it is hoped remedial work by both residents and contractors will have been undertaken.
