YOUNGSTERS, inspired by England’s rugby union World Cup exploits, will have to wait to show off their skills on one particular Saddleworth pitch.
The surface on Churchill playing fields, Greenfield has been out of commission for about three months because of extensive work by gas distribution network, Cadent.
Used by Saddleworth School pupils and also Saddleworth Rangers rugby league club, it will remain out of use for the immediate future until Oldham Council can get on site to complete reinstatement works.
A spokesperson for Oldham Council said: “Cadent removed their waste from site on October 17. So, this is the date the site was handed back.
“We are now waiting for ground conditions to improve before we can start work on a comprehensive reinstatement programme.
“Initially we were not going to be involved at all in the works/reinstatement.
“But as the works grew bigger in scale on Cadent’s part a decision was made for a council team to carry out the reinstatement works.
“We have the correct machinery/equipment/expertise to make the site good and to the correct standard.
“Due to the wet weather this work has not yet been carried out. if it had then it could have caused further damage.”
A tree cut down close to the River Tame to allow Cadent to under-take their work is also due to be replaced.
