LANZAROTE IS a destination that seems to attract varied responses when I suggest it to my customers.

Some reply ‘Lanza – grotty’ and wonder if I have lost my mind and many think it is just Puerto Del Carmen, which has the same reputation as Playa De Las Americas in Tenerife or Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria.

I must then begin a long sales spiel to push the benefits – so I will cover some of the highlights here to save myself time in the future.

For starters Puerto del Carmen has benefitted like many other Spanish resorts from massive investment in its promenade area and is a much more pleasing prospect than its old reputation.

It is a great destination for a family self-catering holiday since it has a massive range of restaurants and bars all along the pedestrianised prom.

Costa Teguise is a purpose-built resort town north of Arrecife and is laid out pleasingly around some lovely man-made beaches and a really nice marina surrounded by all the retail and dining options you could need for a pleasant holiday.

My favourite resort is now Playa Blanca at the southern tip of the island. After several good holidays to Puerto we went there this Easter for a week and I loved it.

We stayed at the Sandos Papagayo Resort which is at the eastern-most end of the resort and is a very good standard 4 star hotel right next to the sea and next door to the Papagayo nature reserve which is protected from further development.

This means there is a lovely area for an adventurous walk on the doorstep and the option of the coastal path which offers a level paved pathway all the way to the original marina/docks at Playa Blanca.

On the way you pass the Rubicon Marina which is another purpose-built area full of retail and catering options and is host to the twice weekly market.

I haven’t touched upon the excursions so I will just pick one and say you must visit the Timanfaya Volcano Park for a spectacular visit.

And don’t forget to book with your local travel agent!
